How we calculate

Example

300 Lasius niger (small): a nest, 65–135 cm² (for example about 12 × 8 cm), 5–10 mm chambers, and an outworld of at least 600 cm².

Sources: Formiculture forum (when to move to a nest, tubes and chambers, 16 mm tubes), Antstore forum, stated capacities of commercial nests (Esthetic Ants, Quality Ants, Ant Keepers, Ants Kingdom, Queen of Ants…). These are ballpark figures: watch your colony and adjust.

Frequently asked questions

When should I move from a test tube to a nest?

At about 100 workers for small species (Lasius), about 50 for Camponotus, Messor and Temnothorax, or sooner if the tube’s water runs low or the cotton moulds.

Is a nest that is too big a problem?

Yes: workers scatter, leave rubbish everywhere and mould appears. Better a slightly small nest, then expand.

What chamber height?

5–10 mm for small species, 10–14 mm for medium ones, 12–20 mm for Camponotus.

How big should the outworld be?

At least 20 × 10 cm for a small colony and 20 × 20 cm for harvesters; bigger is not a problem.
