Frequently asked questions

What is the best ant species for beginners?

In North America, Tetramorium immigrans, Camponotus or fusca-group Formica from your area; in Europe, Lasius niger. All have claustral founding and no painful sting.

Which ants do not need hibernation?

Tropical species such as Camponotus nicobarensis or Tetramorium bicarinatum, but they need warmth all year (24–28 °C). In the USA, keep native species only.

Can I keep any ant species?

No: some species are banned (fire ants in the EU) and moving ants across US state lines is regulated. A local species is the safest choice.
